Welcome to The Academy of Environmental Science

Located on the beautiful Salt River, the waterfront location of the Academy provides the perfect setting for 9th and 10th-grade students to explore their environment.  We offer all the courses your child needs to stay on track of graduation at the honors and AP level.  Each class is created to offer hands-on, project-based learning opportunities to ensure connections to the real world. Through our partnership with Citrus County School District students will be able to seamlessly transition to a number of amazing programs at our area high schools including; International Baccalaureate at Lecanto High School, Withlacoochee Technical College, Dual Enrollment with the College of Central Florida, or traditional high school honors courses.

Under the guidance of highly qualified subject area specialists, who bring the content to life, students encounter the environment first-hand as they explore estuaries and rivers by kayak and canoe. Considering Citrus County has one of the few remaining protected coastlines in the state of Florida, with miles of river and aquatic wetlands, the location offers an unmatched experience.

HELP US SAVE OUR SCHOOL!

Recently, our school has faced many challenges regarding the building's structure.  Last year we began a multi-year project to fortify the building.  These repairs are necessary and will ensure the Academy will continue to support student growth throughout the years.   Because AES is a non-profit, 501C3, tuition-free public charter school, repairs and improvements to the building are the sole responsibility of AES. The operational budget of the school is based on student enrollment, which is currently limited to 120 students due to our building size and location. The funding we receive provides for operational expenses, general maintenance and repairs.  Each year our Board of Directors host a fundraiser which helps supplement those funds for student resources and programs.

Our building has been inspected by a professional engineer to determine the necessity of repairs and develop a timeline of renovations. Phase one of these structural repairs began last summer. During the construction, we uncovered damage to our elevator shaft.  We are currently finishing up the necessary repairs to the elevator shaft, which we expect to have operational for the 2023-2024 school year. The repairs completed so far have cost more than $275,000 which has drained our reserve budget. We anticipate the remaining repairs will cost the school $750,000 over the next few years, with approximately $250,000 required for phase two which must be completed the summer of 2023.

We need your help! We are reaching out to our community for help with funding these major repairs. In order for phase two to be completed before students return for the 2023-2024 school year, funding must be in place by February 2023. Without these necessary structural repairs, AES will not be able to open next school year. With your support, we will continue to be a leader in student education for years to come.

Thank you for your continued support of the Academy of Environmental Science.

The Academy’s Chairman of the Board of Directors is Michelle Leeper.  She is available to facilitate parental involvement, assist parents and others
with questions and concerns and resolve disputes.  She may be reached through AES or her phone at 352-302-3319

AES sponsors several fundraisers each year, including Citrus County Educational Foundation Coupon Sales. Profits from fundraising at AES will be used, among other things, to purchase school wide needs, such as additional technology supplies, and instructional materials. A small amount of these funds may be used to provide food and other consumables items for staff sessions throughout the year, staff appreciation, and student recognition. We are always mindful that these are optional for students and are deeply appreciative for the support of the AES community.
